The Sticky Note Post.

Greetings!   If  you're reading this, chances are you came here because you either a) know me from online fandom and fanfiction circles; b) know me from the world of historical reenactment; or c) know me in Real Life.

Due to the split-personality nature of this blog, I now have it set up so that general news and comments, short reviews, fun memes and pictures of cute cats post publicly, as those are general-interest.  Then I have two private f-lists; one is for things fannish (detailed geeky analyses of SF shows, fanfiction, and other disreputable material).

The other is for historical reenactment geekery (containing things like detailed analyses of different kinds of linen fabric for use in historical costuming, Medieval recipe redactions and other disreputable-but-academic material), as well as more tl:dr detailed Stuff About Life.  (I fear I don't *have* enough of a life in and of itself to split it up into three lists . . .)

If you're friending me, please shoot me a PM or comment on this post to let me know which f-list you want to be on (or if you want on both).  Not as friendly as having it all mooshed together and out there free for the public, but I think this setup will run more smoothly for the long haul.  :)

ETA: I will occasionally go through my f-list and do "cleanup" -- removing defunct accounts, accounts that have de-friended me (and which, I'm guessing, are no longer reading my blog), etc., to keep things current and tidy.  If I ever un-friend you in error, be sure to shoot me an email or comment and I'll rectify that ASAP!!  :)

*waves at LJ*

I originally had a post here saying this was a Super Sekrit (Squirrel) alt!account for another LJ user. I've pretty much done away with the Sekrit part of that by now, since things have shifted enough in my life I no longer feel a strong need to keep up the division (at least from the Argyle side of things), but this remains my main "Sherlock" page and identity, with occasional forays into other fandoms. Welcome, all!

Sherlock Seattle card exchange design.

My manip, all public domain material.

“Why, Mr. Holmes – it’s a Naval Treaty! Just what I wanted – thank you!”

“You’re welcome, and a Merry Christmas to you.”

“Hmph. All he gave me was a pair of socks.”

“Hush, Watson.”

(This year’s Sherlock Seattle card exchange design, hastily photoshopped from a Sidney Paget illustration, a Victorian Christmas tree illo, and a freebie vintage holiday frame. Happy holidays, all!)

Got promo cards for a book/etc?

Hello, all! Yeah, long time no post. I'm alive and occasionally check my Friends page, but haven't had writing time, and haven't really had a hell of a lot to say on DW/LJ, even comments (sorry, I read posts and all, but never feel like I have much to add to the conversation). Maybe one of these days I'll be less brain-fried and more able to engage (at least I get to retire in 20-ish years, so there's that free time to look forward to . . .)

At any rate, for once I do have something to say/share: I’ll be going to Norwescon later this month, and thought I’d offer to take any printed promo cards people might have for books, editing services, etc. that you think might go well on the “freebies” advertising table there. I’ve done this for a few friends before, and it usually looks like at least some cards get picked up every time. Norwescon isn’t exactly a gigantic con, but it’s the biggest one I go to, and it’s in Seattle, so it’s a nice way to reach that market. If I have anything left over, I’ll happily take them to MisCon in Missoula, MT (smaller than Norwescon, even, but people there seem to like the freebie table a lot, so …).

If you’re interested, we can message and I can give you my mailing address, or, if you have printable PDFs, my email.

Paging [livejournal.com profile] ginnybpotter . . .?

Hello, all. No, I'm not dead, and I'm fine, but I've been in my usual state of non-comunnicative distraction for a while. The latest thing keeping me distracted was RadCon and all pre-prep and after-catch-up, but while digging out my inbox I discovered an email notification about 2 weeks old from [livejournal.com profile] ginnybpotter asking, very politely, for permission to use a story element similar to one of mine in her own fic.

I tried to respond and say, "Sure, go for it!" but the message bounced. LJ said she has her messages set to private mode, and going to her page it looks like a placeholder rather than something she uses a lot.

If you happen to know her (or if she happens to see this), you can tell her her fic idea is fine with me, and I appreciate her asking! :)

Fic: "On the First Day of Christmas" (Sherlock, G, 1/1)

Title: "On The First Day Of Christmas"
Author: argyle4eva/DameRuth
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Rating: G
Pairing: Gen or Squint
Word count: 221 (in OpenOffice Writer)
Summary: John intends to get as much entertainment out of the approaching festivities as possible. Fortunately, Sherlock is easy to shop for – after a fashion. A 221B ficlet originally written for the Sherlock Seattle holiday card exchange. :)

***

“Happy Christmas,” John said, handing Sherlock a small, brightly-wrapped gift. “Sorry it's not a freshly-murdered corpse. I'm on a budget.”

Sherlock rolled his eyes. “Honestly, you make me sound like a necrophiliac. It's not corpses I love, it's mysteries.”

I know, John thought.

Sherlock tossed the package casually in his hand; his eyes widened when it jingled.

“My mum loves shaking presents,” John explained. “So I got the habit of putting a bell in packages. Covers most tell-tale sounds.”

Sherlock blinked, and seemed to resist an urge to shake the package again.

“Also, that isn't necessarily the original box in which the item was purchased, and I may or may not have had it wrapped at a different shop, if you were planning on comparing papers available around London.”

Sherlock squinted at the festive wrap as if that were a new and intriguing thought.

“Finally, I wouldn't suggest X-raying it at Bart's. You never know what could happen . . .”

Sherlock was now staring at the innocent-looking gift with laser intensity.

“Anyway, put it on the mantel for now,” John finished. “Still twelve days till Christmas.”

Sherlock made a small, frustrated whining sound in the back of his throat.

And so, John thought, smiling innocently on the outside, the fun begins.

Sherlock Seattle Convention: October 4-6, 2013, Seattle, WA

I'm spamming a bunch of comms with this today, and, guess what, since y'all are my friends you get the spammage direct from me, too! (Yes, still alive, more on that fairly soon, I hope.)

SSCon

  1. Memberships for Sherlock Seattle are on sale now! Our website is http://sherlock-seattle.org!

  2. The guest list is slowly but surely growing. Confirmed guests so far include Reapersun, Liz Eckhart (aka professorfangirl), Caitlin Obom, John Longenbaugh (Sherlockian playwright), Abundantlyqueer, Berlynn Wohl, Inchells, Feyuca, Daunt, and (hopefully!) Sketchlock and Madlori.

Yep, it was so much fun last year, it's happening again! Keep up with the latest news on:

AO3 Fundraiser Auction on Tumblr.

I was feeling a bit down recently because I didn't have any spare $ to contribute towards the AO3's recent fundraising drive. Then some lovely Tumblr users came up with the idea of a fic auction to help raise more cash. The Tumblr page is here, at the above address. See the FAQ and Schedule for more info.

I've been avoiding ficathons and auctions and other such things for the last while, since I've been unreliable RE: writing, but the time feels right to come out from under my rock a little and help support the site that kindly hosts a lot of my work (and will host more, when I get back to reposting fic there from Teaspoon and such). I *think* I can handle a 500-word minimum.

Well, 1,000 word minimum, since I'm signing up as both [livejournal.com profile] dameruth AND [livejournal.com profile] argyle4eva. If you've ever wanted custom fic from either of us (*grin*), here's your chance!

Sign-ups for authors end tomorrow at 11:59pm UTC, but if you'd like to sign up you might still be able to squeak through-- but they aren't hurting for volunteers, apparently, so that's not an OMG you must sign up and help now! exhortation. :)

When bidding starts, I'll post additional links/info

I'm back! Again! Sort of . . .

Hello, all! I'm still around -- still more on Tumblr and FB than here (DW and LJ), I fear, since time constraints have been such that the instant-gratification nature of those sites (and the short attention span required to make use of them) have been more suited to the short nibbles of internet time I've been getting. However, I had a free evening today, and went back to "skip=780" (the max LJ allows right now, it seems) and skimmed through it, so I'm mostly-sorta caught up from 3/3 onwards.

Note that when I say "skimmed," I mean it, so I didn't read a lot of posts in depth, but I did my best to get an idea of what was going on.

In general news about my life, RadCon went *very* well this year (and no norovirus, thank all the gods), so yay. Spring has sprung here, and the new house is revealing spring surprises in the form of massive quantities of flower bulbs. *So* massive I'm not sure they'll provide much in the way of blooms (since I suspect the bulbs are overcrowded), but if they do it will be spectacular. Only the snowdrops have flowered so far, but they're always my favorites:

2-26-13 050

The cats have adjusted just fine to their new home since the move last July, and are even getting a bit comfier with each other, as this image proves:

bedtime

I snapped that pic as I was on my way out the door to work, and noticed that the cats were more than happy to take over the nice, warm bed I'd left them. Such a hard, grim life they lead, yes . . .

So, things continue, and I maintain a tenuous foothold online. Not bad, really. :)

More as I have the time . . . and good to "see" you all again!

Another kitty vid . . .

Probably the only other really decent vid I'd gotten of the cats. A bit of explanation: I've been trying to socialize the kitties (well, Dex and Lumen, Fry is already socialized to a fault) by having other people over and feeding them treats, etc. I realized about halfway through this session it might be worth filming, so this sort of starts in the middle, but it's a nice illustration of the cat, esp. Fry's relative size, which is impressive.

My friend Mattias is doing the feeding, here, and the cats are pretty good around him by this point -- though Dex, as is shown, isn't quite up to being petted yet. :) Also, Lumen is a bit shy about taking treats from people's hands, hence the comment about taking her into another room (away from her ravenous counterparts) so she can be fed her treats from a bowl.

The treats are Greenies, theoretically healthy, teeth-cleaning treats, but the cats gulp them down so fast I can't help but wonder if they're getting any real dental effects. They love 'em, though!

Some really crappy quality video of my cats being cute.

. . . Or homicidal. Kinda the same thing, for cats. I've started taking these vids and putting them on YouTube mostly for my mom, but I thought folks might like to see the critters in action. Sorry about the lousy quality -- one of these days I'll actually put some effort into making the vids look good. :P

Apologies for my not catching up on what's been happening here.

Hey, all -- back again for a bit (possibly longer, but I've learned not to promise anything after this last bout of falling off the face of the internet). There's no way I'll be able to catch up on what's been happening here, so sorry if I didn't see any major Life Announcements or am otherwise behind the curve. Glad to be back for now, anyway -- missed y'all! :)

RadCon! (And other 2013 conventions.)

Gah. Sorry for the long absence and lack of writing. It turned into a busy holiday season (what is this Real Life and where did it come from?!?!). Now it's time to start seriously preparing for RadCon next month.

I'mma gonna be a busy girl (itinerary below the cut; I'll be presenting as part of all of the listed panels, either in my own name-right or as part of the Avalon historical group), especially Saturday (and probably Sunday, unofficially, since I'll be acting as gear-hauling-monkey for a couple armoring demos), but I'd love to meet up and squee with anyone from Dreamwidth/LJ who might be attending, during my evenings and/or free time. :)

Just one note -- my fanfic/fangirl persona isn't well known among the IRL friends, so maybe keep mentions about slash'n'fic out of the convo till we're alone. ;)

I'm also going to be at:

*
MisCon,
Norwescon (this one will be a fangirl con for me -- I don't need to be as respectable) ;) ,
SpoCon, and
Sherlock Seattle (ditto the fangirl deal, obviously).
*

RadCon itinerary this-a way. )
