Hello, all! Yeah, long time no post. I'm alive and occasionally check my Friends page, but haven't had writing time, and haven't really had a hell of a lot to say on DW/LJ, even comments (sorry, I read posts and all, but never feel like I have much to add to the conversation). Maybe one of these days I'll be less brain-fried and more able to engage (at least I get to retire in 20-ish years, so there's that free time to look forward to . . .)

At any rate, for once I do have something to say/share: I’ll be going to Norwescon later this month, and thought I’d offer to take any printed promo cards people might have for books, editing services, etc. that you think might go well on the “freebies” advertising table there. I’ve done this for a few friends before, and it usually looks like at least some cards get picked up every time. Norwescon isn’t exactly a gigantic con, but it’s the biggest one I go to, and it’s in Seattle, so it’s a nice way to reach that market. If I have anything left over, I’ll happily take them to MisCon in Missoula, MT (smaller than Norwescon, even, but people there seem to like the freebie table a lot, so …).

If you’re interested, we can message and I can give you my mailing address, or, if you have printable PDFs, my email.

Hello, all. No, I'm not dead, and I'm fine, but I've been in my usual state of non-comunnicative distraction for a while. The latest thing keeping me distracted was RadCon and all pre-prep and after-catch-up, but while digging out my inbox I discovered an email notification about 2 weeks old from [livejournal.com profile] ginnybpotter asking, very politely, for permission to use a story element similar to one of mine in her own fic.

I tried to respond and say, "Sure, go for it!" but the message bounced. LJ said she has her messages set to private mode, and going to her page it looks like a placeholder rather than something she uses a lot.

If you happen to know her (or if she happens to see this), you can tell her her fic idea is fine with me, and I appreciate her asking! :)

Wow, had a great time at Seattle Sherlock, and am in con-recovery mode. Also, since everybody and her cat is on Tumblr nowadays (and I missed some pre-con communications by not having an account), I finally decided to bite the bullet and start Tumbling. Find me at:

http://argyle4eva.tumblr.com/

Okay, back to resting up; this is the last traveling event on the calendar till RadCon next Feb., so I'm hoping the fic-writing time will finally happen now. W00t! TT y'all later!

I tried to x-post from Dreamwidth, but that seems to be not happening. Reposting directly here, apologies if (when?) the DW post clears about 5 seconds after this goes up and spams your f-list.

Hello again! Plans are progressing for the Seattle Sherlock Con, but, as with any such venture, it takes a bit of cash to get a brand-new event off the ground. Since I don't have a lot of spare money, I thought I'd do my fundraising bit by offering fic as a thank-you for donations to the con -- the front page, linked above, has handy Paypal buttons for $5 and $20 amounts to make things easy.

I'm offering 100 words (minimum) of fic as thanks per $5 donated -- so a $5 donation nets you a drabble (at least), $10 gets you 200, etc., up to $20, which gets you 500 words minimum (bonus!). If you want to donate somewhere between $5 and $20, I guess just go for multiples of the $5 button. Note that this offer is *entirely separate* from any offers being made by the con -- I'm acting on my own. The con is also offering nifty incentives: a set of 3 exclusive postcards designed by Reapersun at the $5 donation level, and the postcards *plus* a signed poster to-be-designed by UnicornEmpire at the $20 level. So you can get art AND fic!

I just need proof of payment emailed to me (PM me if you need my email address), and we're good to go! Even though this is for a Sherlock convention, I'll write anything in any of my fandoms/'verses -- from this username or [livejournal.com profile] dameruth -- to any prompt *unless* a prompt happens to hit on a concept I'm already developing in an un-posted work (particularly in a series). In that case, I'll still try to get as close as possible to the original prompt.

*cracks knuckles* I've been needing a boost to get back into writing, and this seems like a good way to do it! :)

W00t! The website for this has gone live, so I can start promoting (click pic to access the site):

sherlock convention

Not only does this promise to be a lot of fun, but I have the honor of being an actual panelist, which I'm really excited about.

It's also the first time my two different identities will be publicly connected; in my other fandom life (mostly of a Doctor Who nature), I'm [livejournal.com profile] dameruth. Once upon a time, there was a reason to keep the fandoms separated (due to some Real Life friends who were reading this journal, but really aren't anymore -- though all my fannish activity over there is f-locked for similar reasons), but now seems like an apropos time to bring the usernames together. I plan to keep separate journals for the foreseeable future, however -- partly for name familiarity in different locations, and also because I'm a lazy broad and the thought of consolidating archives gives me the heebies right now. I have enough catching up to do as it is! ;)

(As proof of my laziness, I'm c'n'p-ing a lot of the text for this announcement from the one I put up on the [livejournal.com profile] dameruth account; shameless, I am.)

If you're in the Seattle area, it's be great to see you here; if you think anyone on your f-lists would be interested, please repost! The goal is to spread the word as widely as possible.

Even if you can't attend personally, a donation in support of the con will net you nifty thank-yous, including special-edition fanart postcards by Reapersun (all 3 postcard designs featured on the Memberships page of the convention site), and/or a signed convention poster by Unicornempire. Excellent incentives, IMHO. ;)

W00t! Again! Lookin' forward to this.

Worthwhile reading for all "Sherlock" fic writers from the Tumblr of Diane Duane, at whose writing feet I worship:

"Johnlock fanfic: On Balloon Words, Idiom!cest, and the Building of Better Smut"

I'm guilty as charged of many of those balloon-words, dammit, and the scary thing is I hadn't even *noticed* just how stylized/ritualized some of that phrasing had become within the fandom. I'll be doing my best to watch out for the same (and similar) in the future . . .
dameargyle: (Holmes_watson)
For those who didn't see it on the LJ holmsean-news post, there's a call for Sherlock Holmes fic, with a shot at getting published!

"Want to see your own Sherlock Holmes story in print?"

Thought the peanut gallery'd like to know about that. ;)

So a formal statement has been issued RE: the temporary listing of Conan T. Barbarian as Humanities faculty at Trinity College in Dublin.

Here's hoping the perps escape discovery, or at least any serious punishment. Yes, messing with an official website is bad, but this was basically harmless, and such a *great* joke!

So I'm fond of checking out Oglaf now and then (for those unfamiliar with it, Oglaf is a very adult and NSFW webcomic with a fantasy/D&D twist -- and a biting sense of satirical, snarky humor to balance the sex), and today I ran across this one-page strip that made me laugh like a loon:

"The Blank Page"

(NSFW for partial, non-sexual nudity and bad language.)

I almost wish my Muse would pull stuff like that, b/c I've got a lot I want to write, and it's been way too easy to get distracted by RL lately. But I'll get there eventually, wimpy-ass Muse or no. ;)
dameargyle: (shakespeare)
This has been going around FB, and definitely deserves a repost here, for all my writer friends. :)

"The Periodic Table of Storytelling."
dameargyle: (star)
A lovely memorial to Diana Wynne Jones, on his blog.

"Being Alive. Mostly About Diana."

Somehow seems fitting for such a fine writer to be written about by another fine writer, who was also a friend.
dameargyle: (star)
Still not quite at a point where I'd want to write up a post of my own, but Diane Duane made an excellent one here, so that'll do for now.

*sigh* So many goodbyes already in 2011 . . .

Hm. Following a tip from [livejournal.com profile] wendymr, it now appears that the "I Write Like" site has become a vehicle for scammy advertising. Whether or not that was the original intent of the analyzer's creator is up in the air, but since it's an annoying end result regardless, I'm dropping the linked result tags from my original post, and y'all may want to do the same. It's a cute meme toy, but not *that* cute. *shrugs*
dameargyle: (commas)
Turns out the "I Write Like" site has made the news -- and there's a teeny bit in the article about the criteria used. Also some entertaining results for the RL writings of various authors:

"I Write Like erupts online, authors scratch heads."
dameargyle: (jackblue)
John and Carole Barrowman will be writing young adult sci-fi adventure books.

A brother and sister team writing the adventures of a brother and sister team? How perfect is that? :D (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako for the link!)
dameargyle: (aurora)
"Music of the sun recorded by scientists."

(Clip is very brief, but the idea is the cool part, really.)
dameargyle: (heart)
Word's been going around the f-list about this, but in hopes of reaching an even wider audience I'm adding a note about it to my blog, too.

There's a new Doctor Who fanfic comm up, [livejournal.com profile] liljacks_corner; it's the home of a G-rated fanfic project designed to cheer up a little boy who's lost his legs and will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. If that isn't a worthy reason to write some fic, I don't know what is.

There are already some posts up on the comm giving more info about the project and providing sign-ups for people willing to write, beta and provide artwork.

FWIW, I've been pleased to see this info being taken up and passed around by a fairly broad spectrum of Who fic-fandom. WTG, fellow Whovians. :)

After what feels like, simultaneously, a very short and very long couple of days, I poked my head up out of my little burrow and saw my shadow -- or at least realized what the date was. OMG, it's MisCon teim already!

Which means, sadly, since I don't have it by now, I'm not going to get any fic posted till after I'm back (late Monday afternoon, and realistically I'm gonna need unpacking and resting time on top of that). *Many* apologies to everyone waiting for updates, and thanks for your patience.

OTOH, if anyone's going to be out Missoula way, do stop by and say hello! Love to meet up with anyone out there who might be onsite in person. ;)

I'll probably be around sproadically till I leave tomorrow (early afternoon), so this isn't necessarily the last thing I'll post before I leave, but just in case life gets any crazier than it has been, I wanted to get this note up for y'all.
