Worthwhile reading for all "Sherlock" fic writers from the Tumblr of Diane Duane, at whose writing feet I worship:

"Johnlock fanfic: On Balloon Words, Idiom!cest, and the Building of Better Smut"

I'm guilty as charged of many of those balloon-words, dammit, and the scary thing is I hadn't even *noticed* just how stylized/ritualized some of that phrasing had become within the fandom. I'll be doing my best to watch out for the same (and similar) in the future . . .

"Silence Gun"

Egad. Someone's finally come up with a weapon that could do in the Doctor -- or at least slow him down a little. :/

(Well, not really -- he doesn't have a human brain, so I'm sure he'd be immune. Yay! Dunno about the rest of us, though . . .)

. . . But I should have time to get back to cyberspace this week, finally. Yey.

As I'm sure you've all guessed, I've been watching and enjoying the new Sherlock eps; probably more on that later. ;) In the meantime, the good news is there will be a third season, and the Moftiss was just teasing (bless) when they hinted against that possibility.

A nice discussion of Holmes fandom (and fan reactions to the Reichenbach tales both old and new) here: The Affair of the Black Armbands.

And, finally, because it cracked me up, a helpful gardening video courtesy of the Utah State University extension office:

OMG! According to this article, not only will Ben Cumberbatch be in the new Abrams Trek movie, but so will Noel Clarke!

"Benedict Cumberbatch Joins J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek 2' in Villain Role"

TOS, Doctor Who and Sherlock all colliding together? Please, please, please! I hope my fangirl heart can take it, if true.

If Cumberbatch doesn't play a Vulcan or a Romulan, there is no justice in this world. I mean, think of the cheekbones . . .!

(Thx to [livejournal.com profile] aclarar for the tip-off.)

. . . While I get my act together and start readying posts. I have *three whole days* off starting today, and can finally get back to the world of LJ. W00t! :D More as I catch up. Till, then, this is an Enya fave of mine that's perfect for today, regardless of one's belief system (the vid is packaged as a Christmas greeting, but hey, it's really a "midwinter" song more than anything else). Enjoy!

Here's another fic first for me: "Complexity" has received the honor of being translated into Chinese by the lovely animal_farm, here. Sadly the site requires a login to view entries -- but then, if you're someone who would be reading Chinese fic of the sort, you may very well have an account there already! ;)

What it says on the tin, sort of. A link sent by a friend, showing the astonishing size of trees once logged in the Pacific Northwest -- so large that small houses could be made from their hollowed-out trunks.

It's both a thing of wonder and sorrow -- wonder that the world could be that amazing, and sorrow that, well, we'll probably never see the likes again. Worth passing along, at any rate.

So a formal statement has been issued RE: the temporary listing of Conan T. Barbarian as Humanities faculty at Trinity College in Dublin.

Here's hoping the perps escape discovery, or at least any serious punishment. Yes, messing with an official website is bad, but this was basically harmless, and such a *great* joke!

Oh, look. Peter Jackson is adding girl!Legolas to The Hobbit.

Lucky for PJ that Martin Freeman will be on the screen pretty much the whole time and providing me with a welcome distraction from whatever will be happening to the original plot.

(Thx to [livejournal.com profile] lamiel_writes for the link.)

[livejournal.com profile] edzel2has a post up on [livejournal.com profile] lifein1973 in which she links to a quiz from a friend who's writing a thesis about the character of Sam Tyler and how/why audience members do (or don't) feel a connection to him. It's pretty short, and I like helping out people with projects like this, so I thought I'd boost the signal.

This made me laugh so hard I cried. Naturally, I had to share it.

"Man told not to wear bunny suit in public."

And no, I'm not anti-furry or anything. It's just the utterly *deadpan* way the thing is written that kills me.

Benedict Cumberbatch joins "The Hobbit"

*begins fangirl chant, "VOICE OF SMAUG! VOICE OF SMAUG! C'mon, PTB, VOICE OF SMAUG!!!"*

Also, 'The Tree of Life' wins Cannes Palme d'Or

Yep, right on track to make this post's satricial "Oscar, Oscar" poster (scroll down to find it) into reality . . .

Also, congrats to Sherlock and Martin Freeman! Blogtor Who vies us a handy DW/SJS/Sherlock BAFTA vid here.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] neadods for the links! :)

Similar to the "literal music videos," and just as funny. Some NSFW language.

"If this summer's movie posters told the truth."

Been getting somewhat caught up on LJ, after many months of spotty attention to it (and just plain absence), ran across these "Sherlock" fandom comics again and thought I'd post links. Seeing as how I'm part of the problem mentioned, it's the least I can do . . . :D

So I'm fond of checking out Oglaf now and then (for those unfamiliar with it, Oglaf is a very adult and NSFW webcomic with a fantasy/D&D twist -- and a biting sense of satirical, snarky humor to balance the sex), and today I ran across this one-page strip that made me laugh like a loon:

"The Blank Page"

(NSFW for partial, non-sexual nudity and bad language.)

I almost wish my Muse would pull stuff like that, b/c I've got a lot I want to write, and it's been way too easy to get distracted by RL lately. But I'll get there eventually, wimpy-ass Muse or no. ;)
