Exactly what it says on the tin -- with a bonus "Doctor Who" bit as well.

Some things I found on Facebook.
Sep. 23rd, 2012 06:52 pmI pretty much run my FB account (which I have because it's the only way to keep up with some friends and relatives, sadly) like a Tumblr, reposting whatever random shiny stuff I encounter that amuses me (George Takei's FB page is a real gem for that -- if you're on FB and haven't checked it out, do yourself a favor and take a look). Here are a couple-three vids I particularly enjoyed.
First, this one answers the age-old question, " What happens when you take a scientist, liquid nitrogen and 1500 table tennis balls?" Not like it isn't easy to *guess* . . .
Next, I don't normally post political stuff here, but if you're of a sufficiently cynical frame of mind you should get a laugh out of this regardless of your party affiliation:
Finally, Geek Parents Are Awesome (though I'm not sure if the animated expressions are cute or creepy):

Yes, it's true -- while I've been off-LJ, I've gone over to the pony side of the Force, as it were. Since I don't participate in the fandom, I wouldn't say I'm a full-blown Brony by any means, but I enjoy the show and can see why it's developed an adult fandom. I also think it's worth reccing to anyone who hasn't given it a shot.

"Balloon words" and Sherlock fandom.
May. 12th, 2012 09:27 pmWorthwhile reading for all "Sherlock" fic writers from the Tumblr of Diane Duane, at whose writing feet I worship:
"Johnlock fanfic: On Balloon Words, Idiom!cest, and the Building of Better Smut"
I'm guilty as charged of many of those balloon-words, dammit, and the scary thing is I hadn't even *noticed* just how stylized/ritualized some of that phrasing had become within the fandom. I'll be doing my best to watch out for the same (and similar) in the future . . .

Dang, been an interesting 20102 thus far. Nothing bad per se, but absorbing. Further fic is in progress, but sloooooooowwwwly. In the meantime, a handful of recs.
For those who liked my rec of "Ash, Gold, Quartz," you will be pleased to learn that there's a sequel in progress: "Firestarter." Thus far, it details the rather chilling backstory of that 'verse's Moriarty.
Also of note: a nicely-erudite Sherlock/Arthurian mashup, "Here Be Dragons." Not a Merlin crossover as I so long (and mistakenly) thought, but something else altogether.
Finally, Diane Duane has begun compiling "A Sherlockian Tarot" over on Tumblr, and it's a good'un. She knows from Tarot symbolism, and her wry-dry comments on A. E. Waite had me lol-ing, hard (why yes, I are an occultism geek). It's also Of Relevance to my own "Being Sherlock" cycle, since the Tarot will have its part to play in that series, and I cannot begin to contain my squee at Lestrade's presence on the Justice card, and John representing Strength -- lion (rather than wolf) symbolism notwithstanding. ;)
Happy Equinox, y'all!

Mar. 20th, 2012 05:27 pmHave a couple bits of Sherlock fun in celebration.
redscharlach gives us "Otters Who Look Like Benedict Cumberbatch."
Fans of Sherlock and the Tarot will probably enjoy "A Sherlockian Tarot". Not credited particularly clearly, but the work of the ever-talented Diane Duane (with a bit of random guest fanart . . .).
Later!

Sherlock fic rec: "Ash, Gold, Quartz"
Jan. 27th, 2012 09:40 pmI rarely use this identity to rec things, but I thought this particular fic might appeal to those who like their Sherlock-fic blended with a bit of magic: "Ash, Gold, Quartz" by
ifonlynotnever. Gracefully and elegantly done (I'm jealous!).

. . . But I should have time to get back to cyberspace this week, finally. Yey.
As I'm sure you've all guessed, I've been watching and enjoying the new Sherlock eps; probably more on that later. ;) In the meantime, the good news is there will be a third season, and the Moftiss was just teasing (bless) when they hinted against that possibility.
A nice discussion of Holmes fandom (and fan reactions to the Reichenbach tales both old and new) here: The Affair of the Black Armbands.
And, finally, because it cracked me up, a helpful gardening video courtesy of the Utah State University extension office:

Whew. Well, the work week kinda kicked a hole in my good intentions to keep up with LJ *each and every day*, but it's the weekend and I'm back and working through the f-list before moving on to respond to comments, and I just came across this post by Diane Duane, asking for feedback about her long-awaited (20+ years!) final Middle Kingdoms book, The Door Into Starlight. Specifically, she wants to know if enough people are interested in actually buying a copy of the finished product to make it worth her while as a professional writer. She added a request for fans to boost the signal (and gather responses), so here I am, boosting.
For those unfamiliar with the series, as Duane points out (and links) in her post, all the previous books are available in e-book format, so one can get caught up with things quickly and at minimal cost. And it's definitely worth getting caught up. Particularly, I would say (and I hope to heck this doesn't sound obnoxiously egotistical, because it's not meant that way), if you like my writing. I consider Duane the single biggest influence on my work, and I think it really shows.
(Unfortunately, while I can't say I've reached her quality of writing, I'm on my way to being just as bad about finishing series work.) Ahem.
Within the pages of the first three Door books, you'll find magic, worldbuilding, fascinating alien species (Sunspark the fire elemental is an intricately-portrayed non-human character, and Duane's time-and-memory-bending dragons hugely influenced my Time Lords in "Flowers"), witty humor, engrossing characters, and an epic romance between Herewiss, Prince of the Brightwood, and Freelorn, Prince-in-exile of Arlen (yes, two princes; that's not a typo!). ;)
So, read, rec, boost the signal and (hopefully) add your voice to the legions who'd pay to see Starlight finally in print! :D

Now, that isn't code for "awful stuff has happened," never fear. I've just literally had next to no time to be on LJ for the last little while. I'm sure I've missed masses of stuff, both fannish and in other folks' Real Lives, and I apologize for any cluelessness I may display while I catch up.
Up first in playing catch-up, here's a new "Simon's Cat" vid, courtesy of
mmegaera (reversing the usual polarity of the neutron flow, IIRC):
It's a suitable lead-in to my next kitty-based post.

The, er, elements of style.
Apr. 11th, 2011 07:59 pmThis has been going around FB, and definitely deserves a repost here, for all my writer friends. :)

Checking to see if the crosspost function (from Dreamwidth) still works, and letting people know there's an awesome Harry Potter-themed Death Eater t-shirt for sale here, for another 8 hours today (April 8th). I might just get one, when I'm home and on a computer I consider safe for use with credit cards. :)
