. . . While I get my act together and start readying posts. I have *three whole days* off starting today, and can finally get back to the world of LJ. W00t! :D More as I catch up. Till, then, this is an Enya fave of mine that's perfect for today, regardless of one's belief system (the vid is packaged as a Christmas greeting, but hey, it's really a "midwinter" song more than anything else). Enjoy!

So, when I'm getting myself back in the mood for writing fic after a long hiatus, I listen to music. A lot of music. And, sometimes, I end up finding an album that fits a particular fic or 'verse so well it might as well be the freakin' official soundtrack.

I have found the "Being Sherlock" soundtrack, and it is Shriekback's Sacred City.
The rest under the cut for those uninterested in fic soundtracks. )

Hey, y'all. Watch this:

In other news:

Got the computer fixed, but then got whacked by a ton of offline activity. This year's 12th Night celebration for the historical group hit a snag in site booking and ended up being held so late in January (the last weekend!) that the name was practically a joke, but the event itself went well. If anyone wants, I can post some recipes from the feast I ran; the best received dishes this year were my interpretations of Meat of Cyprus Royal (chicken in wine and honey sauce) and Torta Bianca (ginger-rosewater cheesecake pie).

Got more stuff coming up this weekend, and then US Prez Day weekend is RadCon and I'm doing a metric butt-ton of paneling there this year, both with the historical group and, disconcertingly, in my own right as well -- they must have been short of warm bodies this year. I've been individually booked for "The History of Dueling," "How To Pull An All-Nighter," "How to Start a Fan Group," and "How to Buy a Sword" (can't remember the exact title of that last one, but that's what it boils down to). I . . . guess that rather sums up how others see my expertise, which is interesting. As part of the historical group I'll be presenting a talk on the Kensington Runestone (fascinating story whatever you believe about the stone itself), will play a supporting role in The History of Beads, and will take part in a demonstration of German Longsword techniques and skillz. I'd be on the Arms & Armor Through the Ages panel, too, but that may end up booked opposite the Runestone deal, in which case I'll just loan most of my pointy objects for show and tell.

Anyhoo, that's a rather long-winded way of saying you STILL may not see much of me around these parts for a bit longer. But I'm finally catching up on my reading, and am longing to be back here on a more regular basis. Missed you guys!

Y'know, I really have no interest in seeing Tron Legacy. It's not that I don't have a great fondness for the original Tron, which I still love even if it is a cheesy movie at heart and some of the computer effects are underwhelming by today's standards. When it came out (I saw it in the theater, being the dinosaur I am), it was mind-blowing, and it still retains a dizzy, joyous sense of wonder-and-discovery to this day, along with an incredibly distinctive and original design sense.

The trailers for Legacy, however, look downright dull. The design work has none of the creative spark of the original, for all the effects are a thousand times more polished: every clip looks like every other movie being made now, with dark lighting, a grim color palette, and static compositions. What's apparently an attempt to give gravity and mythic depth instead plays in the trailers as leaden ponderousness. The only visible spark of life in the acting is Bruce Boxleitner's cameo snippets (though to be fair, I think everyone else was being *directed* to be lifeless, to show this is srs biznss, so that's not a snark at the actors).

I say unto you: meh. I'll Netflix it. Maybe. It might surprise me, but my hopes are not high.

OTOH, while I couldn't give a rip about the movie, I am deeply enamored of its Daft Punk soundtrack. I think I've played the CD ten times since I bought it. Great stuff, worth every penny. If you like soundtracks, thisn's a winner. Some slightly cynical "this is the opening theme" and "this is the end credits" riffs, but even those are handled well. Gets 4 stars and a less-than-three; Dame Ruth says, check it out. ;)

And then there's this:

Funny Pictures - TRON Cat
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

Seriously, it doesn't get better than that.

So, tl;dr -- big "who cares?" in the direction of the film, wild love for all the peripheral goodness it's been generating.

So a friend and I were eating chocolate and cruising YouTube the other night, watching random vids of Christmas traditions from around the world (inspired by this Cracked column, "Five creepy Christmas traditions from around the world"), and we got into a Krampus-fest to celebrate our Germanic heritage.

This vid had us laughing our asses off, and since I cant get the catchy little tune out of my head, I thought I'd share the earworm. Also, the animation is so cute it just kills me. I'm easily amused when I'm tanked up on chocolate. Which I still am, BTW. Whee!

I posted this here last year, but there's always a place for the classics on Christmas. ;)

Ganked from around my f-list; worth boosting the signal. :D

I'm a huge Murray Gold fan, but I think this should be next season's opening music:

I'd love to see a good Being Human fanvid to this song -- I wish I had any idea how to vid, because I can even see particular scenes to line up with the lyrics. (From what I can tell, it might have actually been on the show's soundtrack, which would be total win on the part of whoever picked the series' music, but it still needs a fanvid.)

Okay, I'll stop posting embedded vids now. ;)

. . . On YouTube, where everything eventually washes up. For a long, long time I'd told friends about a lovely a capella version of Leslie Fish's filk song "Hope Eyrie" that I'd encountered once on a mix tape someone sent me; alas, the mix tape went missing and I never managed to track down another copy of that version, until now. The sound quality's a little flat in this upload, but I love the solemn, liturgical feel the arrangement gives this paeon to space exploration and the moon landing.

Anyway, I'm still alive (*waves*), just been pasted with Work and RL, and now that I have a night off I'm watching vids on YouTube instead of, like, writing and other good stuff. But I'll get there, I promise . . .

What was the #1 song the day you were born? Google the date and #1 song and then post your #1 song on your LJ - preferably with a Youtube vid if you can find one!

"Christopher Lee to release 'symphonic metal' album

The man who played Dracula and Saruman is to tell the story of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, through the universal language of metal."

Seriously, dude, this is gonna give Rick Wakeman a run for his money. And I've gotta admit, Lee still has one hell of a voice.

(What? I never said my musical tastes were *normal* . . .)

Thanks to Topless Robot and the AV Club for the tip-off.

Man, the news is always such a mixed bag. The same day that brought this cool headline:

"Body of Sea Urchin is One Big Eye"

also brought this one:

"Tim Hart of Steeleye Span dies in Spain at 61"

*sigh* I guess it's a greater metaphor for Life.

Apparently I'm starring in a remake of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Or something. (Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] edenfalling.)

O'er the dameruth we go,
Laughing all the way.

For anyone who missed it on the BBC Advent Calendar, or when [livejournal.com profile] who_daily posted the link, David Tennant singing with the Proclaimers. I don't think I've ever seen anyone look happier.

But it has its compensations. Such as accidentally scaring the *crud* out of one of the janitors. The place is pretty much totally deserted; he turned the corner, unexpectedly saw another person in the hallway (me) and nearly had a heart attack. Priceless expression on his face and he recovered and laughed, so it's all OK. :)

Ugh. An hour and a half of data crunching to go. But then I can head home.

Also, in random TMI, tonight's earworm is "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse. Their stuff's been going through my head since "Waters of Mars" aired. Emo fangirl is emo.

Well, that's enough of an LJ break to keep me awake for a bit longer. Back to analysis. Joy.
